Early Signs Of Arthritis In Dogs

March 8, 2022
Arthritis is one of the most common conditions we see in our canine companions. This condition is very painful and debilitating for Man’s Best Friend, just as it is for people. While there are no cures for arthritis, there are treatments that can help reduce his pain and just make him feel better, such as acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and even proper nutrition. Of course, it’s always best when an issue is caught and treated early on. It’s important for you to keep an eye out for warning signs. A local Del City, OK vet lists some red flags to look for in this article.

Limping

This is often the first thing people notice. In the early stages of arthritis, Fido may only limp when he gets up. However, that limp will become worse over time.

Stiffness

It’s normal for pets to slow down as they age. While you may not expect your pooch to be as bouncy or agile as he used to be, he shouldn’t have trouble moving. Arthritis can make Fido quite stiff and clumsy.

Licking

Our canine buddies often nibble or lick at sore spots. You may notice your furry pal worrying at his paws, legs, or the base of his tail.

Reduced Interest In Play

Understandably, being stiff and sore can put quite a damper on your cute pet’s mischievous streak. You may notice your furry friend’s favorite toys gathering dust. Fido may also not seem as excited to take walks or go to the dog park as he used to be.

Trouble Getting Up Or Down

This is one of the most common ones. Your furry bff may have a hard time standing up or lying down.

Depression

Pain isn’t much of a mood booster for anyone. Our canine friends are no exception! Fido may spend time with his head on his paws, just generally looking sad. He may also seem grumpy or withdrawn.

Difficulty Jumping

Arthritic dogs often have trouble jumping and climbing. Fido may not be able to get in and out of the car, or on and off the bed or couch, assuming he’s allowed. Pet ramps or stairs may help with this. If you see any of these warning signs in your four-legged buddy, contact us here at your Del City, OK animal clinic right away.
